Visitant on Shopify

One line in your theme file and every product, collection and cart page is counted - without cookies and without a consent banner. Five minutes, no app to install (there is no Visitant app in the Shopify App Store, and you do not need one).

Time: 5 minCode: 1 lineCookies: 0

What you need

  • A Shopify store where you are the owner or a staff member with the Themes permission.
  • A free Visitant account with your store domain added (the dashboard shows this same code with your domain filled in).
  • Your store domain, for example yoursite.com - without https:// and without www.

Setup in 5 steps

  1. 01 Open the theme code editor

In Shopify admin go to Online Store - Themes. Next to your current theme click the ... (three dots) button and choose Edit code. The exact wording may differ in your version of the admin.

Shopify recommends duplicating the theme first (... - Duplicate) so you always have a backup. A one-line change is safe, but the copy costs nothing.

  2. 02 Open layout/theme.liquid

In the file list on the left open the Layout folder and click theme.liquid. This is the frame every storefront page is built in, so a script placed here runs on the home page, collections, products, search, blog and the cart page.

  3. 03 Paste the Visitant line before </head>

Use the editor search (Ctrl+F) to find </head> and paste the line below directly above it. Replace yoursite.com with your store domain.

    <script defer data-domain="yoursite.com" src="https://annuora.com/v.js"></script>

The script is under 2 KB gzipped and loads with defer, so it never delays your product images or the theme's own JavaScript.

  4. 04 Save and open your store

Click Save in the top right corner. Then open your store in a normal browser tab (not the theme preview) and click through two or three pages: home, a collection, a product.

Shopify caches storefront pages for a short time. If you see no data after a minute, open a product page you have not visited today.

  5. 05 Add the goals that make sense without checkout

Theme code does not run on the checkout steps, the Thank you page or the Order status page - Shopify sunset the old checkout.liquid route (sunset for the Thank you and Order status pages on 28 August 2025, unsupported for the other checkout steps) and checkout can now only be extended through Shopify's checkout extensions and pixels, which run in a sandbox our page script does not run in. That is true on Shopify Plus too. So Visitant sees everything up to and including /cart, but not orders, order value or revenue. In the dashboard go to Settings - Goals and add Visit /cart as your conversion; if you want a step closer to the sale, add data-v-event="Begin checkout" to the checkout button in sections/main-cart-footer.liquid (or wherever your theme keeps it).

Naming this limitation honestly matters: every cookie-free tool that lives in the theme has it. Funnels in Visitant end at the cart on Shopify.

Is it working? Check in 60 seconds

Open your Visitant dashboard in one tab and your store in another. Everything below should happen within a minute of saving the theme.

  • The current visitors counter at the top of the dashboard shows 1 (you) within a few seconds of loading a product page.
  • The install box with the code snippet disappears from the dashboard and the first bar appears on the chart.
  • Open a product page from a Google search result or type the store address by hand: the Sources table shows Google or Direct accordingly.
  • Visit /cart: it appears in the Pages table. Open the checkout: nothing new appears - that is the checkout limitation from step 5, not a bug.
  • View the page source (Ctrl+U) and search for v.js: the line sits inside <head>, exactly once.

Common problems

Nothing shows up in the dashboardCheck the domain in the tag: it must match the site added in Visitant exactly, without www. A typo there is the number one cause in our experience. Also make sure you edited the theme that is currently published, not a draft copy.
The counter works on the home page but not on product pagesSome themes use a separate layout file for certain templates (for example layout/password.liquid or a custom layout set in the template's JSON). Open the template in the code editor and check which layout it uses; paste the line there as well.
Orders and revenue are missingExpected on Shopify: theme code cannot run on checkout pages, so purchases are invisible to any theme-level script. Use Visit /cart or a Begin checkout event as your goal (step 5).
The line disappeared after a theme updateTheme updates from the Theme Store replace the theme files. Re-add the line to theme.liquid after updating, or keep a note in your update checklist.

Questions

Do I need a cookie banner for Visitant on Shopify?

No. The script sets no cookies and stores no IP addresses, so it does not fall under the consent rules that Shopify's own privacy banner exists for. You can keep the banner for other apps if you use them.

Will it slow down my store?

No measurable effect in our experience: the script is under 2 KB gzipped, loads with defer and sends one small request per page. Shopify's own theme JavaScript is many times larger.

Can Visitant count the AI crawlers reading my product pages?

Only partially on Shopify. Crawlers do not run JavaScript, and Shopify hosts your storefront, so you cannot add our server snippet there. Crawlers that identify themselves and hit the tracker are still recognised, but the full crawler report needs a server or Cloudflare snippet in front of the store.

Is there a Visitant app in the Shopify App Store?

No, and you do not need one. The theme line does the same job an app would, without a monthly app charge.
